north hastings community choir

The first meeting of the NORTH HASTINGS COMMUNITY CHOIR occurred on September 14, 1993 with a gathering of twenty people. Led by Lynn Watson with piano accompanist Mike Fitzgerald, the only requirement for membership was then, and remains today, a love of music. The choir in those early days would meet weekly to learn their music and take part in community events when asked.

In 1997, the NHCC held its first Christmas concert in the Village Playhouse under the capable direction of Al Osborne and pianist Pat Noyes. In these early years, the choir also held Christmas performances at the York River Heights apartment building and carol singing beside the Santa's Village House. Following a spring concert in May 1998, the choir has never looked back! Over time, the concerts have evolved to include themes, decorations, costumes and guest artists.

Under the musical leadership of Catherine Rull in 2000, the choir met for weekly rehearsals at the Hastings Centennial Manor, performed at community events and sold-out concerts and continued to expand in numbers and abilities. Janice Carser replaced Pat Noyes as accompanist when Pat decided that she wanted to sing!

In September 2002, Howard Baer became the new choral director when Ms. Rull stepped down. He brought with him 30 years of musical expertise, having been nominated for six JUNO awards as an arranger/producer. The choir grew to eighty voices and performed to packed houses.

Asta Ballstadt volunteered to lead the choir in September 2005, until a permanent director could be found. She brought yet another dimension to the group having a very diverse musical career as a choral director, music teacher and piano accompanist in Glenn Gould Studio and Massey Hall.

Erin Morlock brought the choir a fresh new approach to learning music when she moved from the choir's alto section to become its director in January, 2006. Erin had also conducted the Madawaska Valley Community Choir in Barry's Bay for 9 years. During this period, a second pianist, Rod Moffit joined Janice Carser to share the role of accompanist. When Janice returned to the alto section, Rod Moffit became the sole piano accompanist.

In September, 2009, with Erin pursuing other challenges, a new director was found in Melissa Stephens who has been conducting choirs for almost 30 years. Melissa lives in Haliburton where she teaches full time and directs three choirs. She also directs the College Community choir in Lindsay and is very active in the Highlands Summer Festival.

This is truly a Community Choir which has very diverse musical abilities and which is always interested in welcoming new members! It has evolved under capable directors from twenty individual voices to a blended choir of over seventy-five people who continue to entertain at community functions on a continual basis for the sheer love of singing.
