MUSICAL THEATRE AT NORTH HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL

The Students:

Not only do the students have to audition to be accepted in to the NHHS Musical Theatre Program, but they also must audition for parts in the show. The course fills two classes each day during second semester for the Music Theatre students. Their goals are to perfect their performance skills through singing, dancing, and acting during the four month course. Along with practising performing skills every day, students must complete the curriculum. Their curriculum includes: written assignments such as script content and analysis, literary or persuasive essays, and writing theatre reviews. They have assignments that focusing on future careers in performing arts. They must complete a personal portfolio and a career poster.

This year in the NHHS Musical Theatre course, we have also added a weekly Newspaper article, A Peek at the Program, which the students will complete in pairs. Their final exam is the actual performance in May, which is worth 30% of their final mark.

From past productions produced by NHHS and taught by Allison Jowett, Kate Cockburn, Linda Neary and Diane Winmill, the alumni have accomplished successful career pathways. From recent years, the alumni have furthered their theatre experiences by attending college or university for the dramatic arts, vocal, instrumental, technical production, etc. Some alumni of the program are working in related theatre fields and experiencing success in the following: actors and models in Toronto, set and prop builders in Ontario film industry, Faculty of Music graduates, actors with Theatrics Summer Theatre, and The Bancroft Theatre Guild. These students have become exceptionally well-rounded citizens and ardent supporters of the Performing Arts.
