bancroft summer theatre

Summer theatre has been operating every year in this building since 1992, and is an anchor tenant for the Village Playhouse. The first 15 seasons were under the production of THEATRICS SUMMER THEATRE, who then arranged for LAUGH LINES THEATRE to take over summer operations for 2007-2010. Under the guidance of Laugh Lines, the next transition to a more broadly-based community group called BANCROFT SUMMER THEATRE begins in 2011.

Laughs and more in 2011!

For the 20th season of summer comedy at the Village Playhouse, BANCROFT SUMMER THEATRE will serve up two shows filled with laughter and more. Look for comedy with a twist of invention - one show fresh from its Broadway run, based on a classic novel and movie, followed by a show that mixes extra character depth and dramatic moments with superbly funny lines.

BLACKFLY SUMMER THEATRE opens the season July 5 with The 39 Steps, a witty spoof of Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 classic film in which the hero finds himself in constant danger. This fast-paced show features four actors who play over 100 characters and objects as the plot traverses great distances and lightning-speed scene changes. This adaptation by Patrick Barlow was recently nominated for six Tony Awards during its Broadway run in 2010. Brace yourself Bancroft - Hitchcock is coming to town fresh off Broadway with a bag full of tricks, suspense, danger and big laughs! check out this daily blog!

Beginning August 2, LAUGH LINES THEATRE presents the dramatic comedy Storm Warning by Norm Foster. Set in 1953 at a rustic cottage resort, the story brings us into the life of Jack, a reclusive WWII vet with shadows in his past, and Emma, a brash and brassy big-band music arranger. Critics call this play "Beautifully written. Elegantly simple" (Halifax Daily News) and "Entertainment at its best" (The Medium News). Storm Warning runs August 2 to 20.

The season ends with The Vaudevillian Hoop La, a variety show for all ages brimming with dance, music, comedy and surprise. This show is presented by HAPPY MEDIUM THEATRE. There will be one matinee and two evening performances from August 26th to August 27th. This show features special pricing of $12.50 for kids under 12 and seniors over 65.

Performances run Tuesday to Saturday starting at 8 p.m.

On two Saturdays (July 16 and August 13), there is a 2 p.m. matinee in addition to the evening show.

Telephone orders (613-332-6141) can be made beginning May 1.

The box office in the Playhouse lobby opens June 1 (Monday to Saturday 2-6 p.m.).

Come enjoy this 20th season of comedy in the air-conditioned comfort of The Village Playhouse!
